Botanical Garden Ooty

The Botanical Garden is located in the heart of Ooty (Udhagamandalam), a famous hill station in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, India. The Government Botanical Garden was laid out in 1848 by the Marquis of Tweedale, the then Governor of Madras. It covers a vast area and is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. The garden is home to a vast collection of plants, both exotic and indigenous, including rare species of flowers, ferns, and trees. The carefully curated sections showcase a wide variety of horticultural and botanical specimens. One of the highlights of the garden is the fossilized tree trunk, believed to be around 20 million years old. It is an interesting exhibit for visitors interested in geological history. The Toda Hill within the garden premises provides a scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views of Ooty and its surroundings. The garden features beautifully laid out terraced flower beds, well-maintained lawns, and vibrant flower displays, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. There is a dedicated Fragrance Garden where visitors can enjoy the delightful aroma of various aromatic plants and flowers. The Glass House is a greenhouse built-in 1857, modeled after London's Crystal Palace. It hosts an annual flower show, usually held in May, attracting tourists and flower enthusiasts. The garden has a conservatory that houses a variety of potted plants and flowers, creating a controlled environment for certain species. Apart from its recreational aspect, the Botanical Garden also serves as an educational and research center. It contributes to the conservation and propagation of various plant species.
