Government Museum
The museum is in Thirukogarnam nearly 2 Kms from Pudukkottai. We could see the swords, paintings, handicrafts of metal, stone, ancient weapons, sculptures , the Skeleton of animals birds, snakes, clothes, wooden carvings, and a big dinosaur. It crawling and sounds every hour. The museum kept opened from 9.30am to 5pm everyday except on Fridays, Independence day, Republic day and Gandhi jayanti. Supposed to be the second largest museum in the state so we expected more. Located in an old building. It is more of a natural history museum with a life size dinosaur which definitely was not discovered in Pudukkottai. On the top level, stuffed animals, birds and fish are on display.
Also some paintings and photos of the Thondaiman dynasty which ruled this place. The interesting archaeological statues of Hindu and Jain gods and goddesses discovered in the surrounding hills are located in the lower level at the back. Not much thought given to layout of the artefacts.
