Simtokha Dzong

Simtokha Dzong is a historic fortress and monastery located in the Thimphu Valley, near the capital city of Bhutan, Thimphu. It is one of the oldest dzongs in Bhutan and holds cultural and historical significance. Simtokha Dzong, also known as Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang (Palace of the Profound Meaning of Secret Mantras), was built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan. It served as a fortress to defend against Tibetan invasions. The dzong is an exemplary specimen of Bhutanese architecture, characterized by large whitewashed walls, traditional wooden windows, and intricate carvings. The central tower (utse) features paintings and statues depicting Buddhist deities. Simtokha Dzong has both religious and administrative functions.
