Thanjavur

Thanjavur, historically known as Tanjore, is a city located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It holds immense historical, cultural, and architectural significance. Thanjavur has a rich history and was the capital of the Chola dynasty, one of the most powerful and influential dynasties in South India during the medieval period. Cholanadu refers to the region associated with the Chola dynasty. Thanjavur, as a major city of the Chola dynasty, played a central role in Cholanadu.  The Cholas were known for their remarkable contributions to architecture, art, and literature. The Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, built by Rajaraja Chola I in the 11th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of Chola architecture. The Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as the Big Temple, is an iconic symbol of Chola architecture. It features a massive Shiva Lingam and a towering vimana (temple tower) that is one of the tallest in India. The Chola period is renowned for its vibrant art and culture. The Cholas were patrons of the arts, and this era witnessed the flourishing of literature, sculpture, and bronze casting. Thanjavur is home to the Saraswathi Mahal Library, established during the Maratha rule. It houses a vast collection of ancient manuscripts, including some from the Chola period. Following the decline of the Chola dynasty, Thanjavur came under the rule of the Marathas. The Maratha rulers, especially Serfoji II, continued to contribute to the cultural and educational development of the region. The Thanjavur Royal Palace complex houses art galleries and museums that showcase artifacts, paintings, and sculptures, offering insights into the region's history.
